James M. Mason, 77, of Viroqua died on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. The Reverends Lindsay Paul Jordan and Margaret Eiben Hoversten will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker (hwy 56) in Viroqua, and also at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11.

In Lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Excellence in Education Wall of Recognition Scholarship Fund at the Viroqua Area Schools or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Online condolences may be offered at www.vossfh.com.

The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.

The TV broadcast has been provided by Vernon Communications (video) and WVRQ radio's Gary Gilbertson and Pete Walby. (audio)

All the games have been telecasted on Vernon Communication's local TV channels, as well as online at ustream.tv.

Many of the games have been broadcast on Viroqua radio via WVRQ. Some of them haven't, but Gary and Pete provided the audio for the telecast regardless.

DVD's of the telecast are available from Vernon Communications. They can be ordered at the Park Bowl in Viroqua -- come to the concession stand or the press box to order. Or call Vernon Communications at 608-634-3136 to order.

Saturday Matchups Explained

The two undefeated teams play in Game 11 on Sat. at 1 pm CT -- Pahrump Valley, Nevada v. Eden Valley Watkins, Minnesota. Both teams will advance from there. The winner will go to Game 13 as a reward for being undefeated by getting some time off. The lose of Game 11 has to play immediately in Game 12.

In Games 12 & 13, we want to avoid matchups that have already occurred. If that's not possible, we want to avoid the most recent matchup.

So, Game 10 is Pratt v. Viroqua. The loser is eliminated.

~~If Viroqua wins Game 10 Fri. night, then this is easy:~~
~~Pahrump Valley has already played Pratt in Game 1 and Ripon in Game 7.~~
~~EVW has already played Viroqua.~~

~~Viroqua would play Pahrump Valley on Saturday (they've never played before)~~
~~Ripon would play Eden Valley Watkins (they've never played before)~~

If Pratt wins Game 10 Fri. night, then we have to do some analysis:
EVW has played neither.
Pahrump Valley played Pratt in Game1
Pahrump Valley played Ripon in Game7
So we prefer the older matchup -- Pahrump Valley vs. Pratt
Therefore Ripon would play Eden Valley Watkins

Therefore, no matter who wins Game 10, Ripon will play Eden Valley Watkins on Saturday.

The timing can't be determined until after the 1:00 pm CT Sat. game however, as the winner of Game 11 gets the reward of time off until Game 13 at 7:30 pm CT.

2011 Class A State Tournament

The 2011 Class A State Legion Baseball Tournament starts Wed. July 27 in Richland Center. We'll be posting updates here on viroquabaseball.com.

Viroqua (32-14) takes on Richland Center (12-14) in Game 4 of the tournament at 7:30 pm CDT.

WVRQ will be carrying the game on the radio. I believe Vernon Communications is also televising the game on their local cable channel and online at ustream.com (see link in the upper right of our website)

The frvlegion site will also have updates during the tournament.

UPDATE 1: Viroqua lost Wed. night to Richland Center 11-1. Viroqua plays Bruce Thurs. at 12:30 pm. Both teams are 0-1.

UPDATE 2: Viroqua lost Thurs. to Bruce, 10-0. Viroqua is eliminated from the State Tournament.

Viroqua is automatically entered in to the National tournament as the host. The Legion's next game is Thurs. Aug. 4 at 8:00 pm CDT

2011 Viroqua Legion Baseball Schedule

The Legion team opens with a rare Saturday evening home doubleheader on June 4 at 5:00 pm against West Salem.

Most of the scheduled matchups are doubleheaders during the week, including the traditional Wed. night 6 pm home doubleheader every week of the regular season, which wraps up on Sunday July 17.

There are about 48 regular season games scheduled (hard to tell exactly how many are scheduled in some of the tournaments). This is down from recent years because of the schedule ending a week earlier -- thanks to the National tournament moving a week earlier. It also doesn't mean 48 games will actually get played, as usually a few get rained out and not made up each year.

Regionals start July Wednesday July 20 and run thru Sunday July 24. The games will be around the Viroqua area. We'll get an update out on that as we get closer to summer.

The Wisconsin Class A Legion Baseball State Tournament is in Richland Center this year, from Wednesday July 27 thru Sunday July 31.

And once again, Viroqua gets the honor of hosting the Division 2 Central Plains National Tournament, from Thurs. Aug. 4 thru Sun. Aug. 7. We'll get more updates on this too as we get closer to summer. Lots of preparation is already underway.
