Nationals Schedule

Division II National -- Central Plains Regional
Pratt, Kansas

UPDATE Sun. Aug. 11 1:38 pm:
Congratulations to LaCrescent, Minnesota for winning the American Legion Baseball Division 2 Central Plains National Regional.

Congrats also to Waupun, Wisconsin for finishing 2nd.

And, of course, Congrats to the Viroqua Legion baseball team for a great season and also ending the season at the National Tournament.

Thanks to all the players, coaches, families, fans, local media and Legion posts for making this another successful American Legion baseball season.

UPDATE Fri. Aug. 9 1:30 pm: Friday's games were all postponed to Saturday. Teams will play 5 inning games on Sat. to make up for lost time and try to squeeze in all the games on Sat. and Sun.

WVRQ will be broadcasting all the Viroqua games at the Central Plains Regional in Pratt, Kansas.

Through a special arrangement, Vernon Communications will be offering the audio feed on their ustream site for those outside the regular WVRQ listening area. This will only be the audio feed, no video. http://www.vernontel.com/live

If you are on a mobile device, download the ustream app and search for "vernoncommunications" all one word. That should work.

The stadium complex in Pratt does have just a video feed that will also be available during the games, at http://greensportscomplex.com/

It is unlikely the two will sync up, so keep that in mind when trying this out.

All the games for the Pratt team will have the audio streamed online at themighty1290am.com

Good luck to the team and fans heading to Nationals!

Times are approximate except for the first day and the first and second session of each following day.

Championship Baseball Weekend

Congratulations to Viroqua for qualifying for the Central Plains National Tournament in Pratt, Kansas, Thurs. Aug. 8 thru Sun. Aug. 11.

Wisconsin is sending TWO teams. Since Viroqua is the last undefeated team in the State Tournament, Viroqua is guaranteed no worse than a second place finish in State.

Four teams are left to compete for the Class A State Championship. Waupun, Wisconsin Dells, or Westby each have 1 loss and will need to win 3 games in a row to win the Championship. Viroqua is undefeated and "only" needs to win 2 out of possibly 3 games to win the Championship. With each team fielding an impressive amount of talent and experience, any of these teams could end up the Champion.

Saturday's schedule

Game 12 -- 5 pm -- Waupun (2-1) v. Wisconsin Dells (2-1)  (loser eliminated)

Game 13 -- 8 pm -- Viroqua (3-0) v. Westby (2-1)

If Viroqua beats Westby, only 2 teams remain: Viroqua and the Winner of Game 12.  Viroqua would be undefeated, so would only need to win 1 on Sunday for the Championship. The Winner of Game 12 would have to beat Viroqua twice for the Championship.  Either way, in this scenario, both teams qualify for Nationals.

If Westby beats Viroqua, 3 teams with 1 loss remain, so two games are guaranteed on Sunday. Westby would play the Winner of Game 12 at 1 pm Sunday.  The Winner of Game 14 (the Sunday 1pm game) would advance to Game 15 (approx. 3:30 pm) v. Viroqua (who was the last undefeated team)

Championship Sunday's schedule

There could be either 1 or 2 games on Championship Sunday.

Game 14 -- 1 pm  -- Winner Game 12 (3-1) v. Winner Game 13 (either 4-0 or 3-1)

Game 15 --  3:30 pm -- The possible second game is slated to start at approximately 3:30 pm, but that is really an estimate. There's usually a 20-30 minute break between games.

Game Stats (XLS)

Saturday Schedule:

Wisconsin Dells (2-1) will play Waupun (2-1) at 5 pm (loser eliminated)

Viroqua (3-0) will play Westby (2-1) at 8 pm

Game recap:
Big-time hits, solid pitching and stellar infield play all contributed to Viroqua's 10-2 win over Wisconsin Dells, Friday night.

Right off the bat, Viroqua picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by Dave Crandell to left field.

Through five innings, Viroqua held a 4-0 lead, which was helped in part with four double plays by Viroqua's infield. In the top of the sixth, Wisconsin Dells, with two outs, closed the gap to two, 4-2, but Mitch Stalsberg soon closed out the inning, coming in relief of starting pitcher Crandell and striking out the Dells' next at-bat for the third out.

In the bottom of the sixth, Viroqua shut the door on Wisconsin Dells' undefeated run in the 2013 State Legion Tournament with six runs, including a three-home run by Tyler Trautsch to right field and two unearned runs.

Crandell pitching almost six innings, picked up the win, striking out two and walking two.

Leading hitters for Viroqua were Trautsch 2-for-3, a three-run home run and three RBI; Crandell was 2-for-3, a two-run home run and two RBI, and Brandon Mickelson was 2-for-3 at the plate.

UPDATE Fri 6:30 pm --- Westby will play Viroqua Saturday night. The only question is if it's at 5 or 8 pm

In a high-hitting baseall game, Westby eliminates Clintonville with a 12-5 victory Friday. Westby had 14 hits in the game to Clintonville's 12.

Westby took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but by the bottom of the second inning, Clintonville had come back, leading 5-4.
Clintonville's lead, though, was short-lived. Westby tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Alex Midtlien in the third inning and reclaimed the lead, 7-5, on a two-RBI single by Nick Neely in the fourth.
Westby added three more runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to put the game out of reach for Clintonville.

Jedd Sebion picked up the complete-game pitching win, striking out three and walking one.

Neely was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI at the plate.

Friday and Saturday Scheduling

Friday's ballgames at the Bowl

You can catch all these games online, provided by Vernon Communications.

You can follow the results and schedule either on this webpage or using a bracket format (pdf)

Game 9   2 pm    Westby (1-1) v. Clintonville  (1-1) (loser eliminated)

Game 10  5 pm   Chilton (1-1) v. Waupun (1-1) (loser eliminated)

Game 11  8 pm   Viroqua (2-0) v. Wisconsin Dells (2-0)

Both Viroqua and the Dells will advance to Saturday play.

Saturday timing
The timing on Saturday is determined by the results of Game 11 featuring the last two undefeated teams.

The winner of Game 11 plays at 8 pm Saturday.

The loser of Game 11 plays at 5 pm Saturday.

Saturday matchups
Under the "previous opponents rule", previous matchups are to be avoided in Games 12 & 13

There are only two possible matchups to avoid:

-- Viroqua has already played Waupun

-- Wisconsin Dells has already played Clintonville

This chart has the 4 possible combos of winners out of Games 9 and 10:

To read the chart:

If Westby wins Game 9 and Chilton wins Game 10, then there are no conflicts and use the "default" schedule:  W9 (Westby in this scenario) v. L11; W10 (Chilton in this scenario) v. W11

If Westby wins Game 9 and Waupun wins Game 10, we need to avoid the Waupun/Viroqua rematch. Therefore on Saturday, Viroqua would play Westby; Dells would play Waupun

If Clintonville wins Game 9 and Chilton wins Game 10, we need to avoid the Dells/Clintonville rematch. Therefore on Saturday, Viroqua plays Clintonville; Dells plays Chilton

If Clintonville wins Game 9 and Waupun wins Game 10, we need to avoid both the Dells/Clintonville rematch AND the Waupun/Viroqua rematch. So then on Saturday, Dells would play Waupun; Viroqua would play Clintonville

(Updated Fri. 8-2-2013, 4:00 pm -- Westby beat Clintonville 12-5)
(Update 2: In Game 10, Waupun beat Chilton 6-3)
(Update 3: In Game 11, Viroqua beat Wisconsin Dells 10-2)

In other words...

In a large nutshell (again: these are just the matchups, NOT the timing)

If Clintonville wins Game 9, then on Sat. Viroqua plays Clintonville; Dells v. W10

If Westby wins Game 9, then on Sat. Westby plays either Viroqua or the Loser G11 (which could still be Viroqua, but could be the Dells)

If Waupun wins Game 10, then on Sat. it's Dells v. Waupun; Viroqua v. W9

If Chilton wins Game 10, then on Sat. they either play the Dells or the Winner G11  (which could still be the Dells, but could be Viroqua)

Again: these are just the matchups, NOT the timing. The timing is dictated by the outcome of Game 11 Fri. night.

Long story short (far too late for that!), you can follow the results and schedule either on this webpage or using a bracket format (pdf)

Welcome to Viroqua

For those of you new to the Viroqua area, here are a bunch of links to help you plan your trip --- outside of potentially watching 15 baseball games, of course!

On Saturday mornings in the summer, the Viroqua Farmers Market takes place at the Western Technical College parking lot in downtown Viroqua. There is a lot of organic food and Amish goods.

If you're looking for a park to hang out for awhile to have a picnic or to burn off the energy of kids there are several Viroqua City Parks to choose from. There is a playground set for younger kids at the Park Bowl. Eckhart Park has picnic shelters and a lot of playground equipment. It's just up the left field hill from the Park Bowl. There's a (pretty steep) paved walking path between the cement bleachers and the concession stand, or you can trek up the left field hill, or drive around town and park in the Decker Street parking lot.

And if that's not enough, there are many other attractions around the greater Viroqua and Westby area.

The Viroqua Events Calendar has lots more info on upcoming events. The next major events in town are Wild West Days, August 16, 17, 18 2013. There are a lot western events and re-enactments at Wild West Days. The Hog Wrasslin alone is well worth the trip!

Then we have a 3 day concert, Aug 22-24, Jammin for Vets. Then in mid-September, we have the last County Fair of the year in Wisconsin. This year, it's Wed. Sept. 11 thru Sunday Sept. 15.

Have fun and welcome to Viroqua!

A map to the ballpark is here: http://goo.gl/maps/7xGpW

Wed. July 24 at 8 pm

Viroqua plays in Game 3 v. the Regional Host, Prairie du Chien.  Update: Viroqua won 6-3

Thurs. July 25

Whether and when Viroqua plays on Friday and Saturday depends on how they do on Wed. and Thurs.  Once they get 2 losses, they are done with the Regional tournament.

Updated Spring 2013 Viroqua High School Baseball Schedule

With all the wet ground throughout Wisconsin and continued snow and rain, very few baseball games have been played.

The Coulee conference has come out with a very modified schedule.   Here are Viroqua's games.  This is all very subject to change as weather and field conditions change.

April 22 -- Viroqua at Arcadia

April 25 -- Viroqua at BRF

May 6 -- Westby at Viroqua

May 9 -- GET at Viroqua (doubleheader)

May 13 -- West Salem at Viroqua

May 20 -- Viroqua at Onalaska Luther

From the Coulee Conference:

"The Coulee Conference will implement a shortened conference schedule for the sports of baseball and softball this spring.  This was done in order to guarantee that each team will play each opposing conference school at least one time, guaranteeing a conference champion can be declared in each sport.  Schools may play additional games against conference opponents, but only one will count toward declaring the conference champion.  The dates for the games that count as conference games are listed in the enclosed schedules.  If schools play a doubleheader, only the first game will count toward the conference standings.  Please refer to www.couleeconference.org for updated standings througout the spring."

The full Coulee 2013 spring high school baseball schedule can also be found here:
